We were talking about GENRES last week, and we will be talking about genres of essay writing as we begin review for the Midterm Exam in Week 8. The pictures above are of a modern recreation of an old religious text genre, the illuminated manuscript, specifically, verses of a holy book surrounded by pictures, often embellished with gold leaf. The pages framed above are from "American Koran," a sincere but unorthodox take on an ancient form (traditional Islamic art doesn't show humans), recently on exhibit at Riverside Art Museum. I felt the juxtaposition of the calligraphy and scenes of American life to be a visceral experience of the alienation or culture shock that must be felt by some of our immigrants.
This week we'll review punctuation, abbreviations and numbers, we'll study Chapter 11 of the Concise St. Martin's Guide, and we'll do some reviewing to get ready for the Midterm Exam Next Week.
You can prepare for Chapter 11 work by reading the following:
Article p. 336-38 & Melissa's Analysis p. 341-43
Melissa May's Synthesis p. 346-51
