As the election season winds up, and I contemplate the get-out-the-vote efforts of so many adjuncts, I can't help but reflect on the "tinkle down" effect. How much of new tax revenues for school building will benefit us, versus the presidential status enhancement of big building contracts to award and the administrative salaries boosted by increased "teaching" capacity? How many new dean-lets will get to boast of corner offices and executive toilet privileges, while the heads for the rest of us, students included, fall into increasing neglect for lack of cleaning and maintenance wages?
The rhetoric about what "our kids" and "our community colleges" need requires some serious cross-examination! Students need teachers who are healthy and who earn a decent living. Empire building is another story altogether.
